BRUSSELS (AP) – Dutchman Sifan Hassan broke the world record of one hour that is rarely run by traveling 18,930 kilometers at the Van Damme Memorial meeting on Friday.

The previous record of 18,517 kilometers was set by Dire Tune of Ethiopia at the Ostrava Golden Spike meeting in 2008.

Hassan and Kenyan marathon world record holder Brigid Kosgei fought hand-to-hand at King Baudouin Stadium without fans looking due to the coronavirus crisis. Hassan sped up at the last minute to leave Kosgei helpless in her wake.

Four-time Olympic champion Mo Farah will later attempt to set a new one-hour men’s record at the meeting, which is part of the Diamond League series.
