The former club goalkeeper helped facilitate the 23-year-old’s move to Old Trafford and has urged the Red Devils to “take good care of him.”

New Manchester United signing Donny van de Beek revealed that Edwin van der Sar encouraged him to move to Old Trafford from Ajax, and the former goalkeeper also wrote a special open letter to fans.

Van de Beek became United’s first signing of the summer on Wednesday, joining from Ajax in a deal worth £ 35 million ($ 46 million) plus £ 4 million in add-ons.

Van der Sar is currently the chief executive of Ajax and played an important role in brokering the deal between two of his former clubs.

Speaking to Manchester United’s official website, Van de Beek recalled seeing his compatriot star for United in the past and revealed that Van der Sar had only good things to say about the club.

“Yes, I spoke to him [Van der Sar] and he told me many stories about the club and about everything. He said how great the club is and how enjoyable the experience he had with it was, “said Van de Beek.

“Yes, it is a really important story. I watched a lot of his matches before and I also had a very good meeting with the coach. [Ole Gunnar Solskjaer] and that for me was something really important.

“We talk about football, the club and I always make decisions about my feelings and my feelings were directly good with everything. That was something important for me.”

Van der Sar also wrote a special open letter to United supporters that was featured at the Manchester evening news Thursday.

The note begins: “Dear Manchester United fans, I hope you are doing well.

“It seems our paths have crossed again. One of ours joins you this season. And like so many players before him, he has been with us since he was a child.

“Soon after his debut, he became one of our best. Especially the last two years were incredible. From the final of the Europa League (no hard feelings) to our Champions League career and winning the Dutch championship.

“The team I was a part of showed the world who we are and what Ajax stands for. Like you, we pride ourselves on being one of the best in developing talent and giving young players an opportunity at the highest level. You could say that his new Star is the embodiment of that pride.

“That’s one of the many reasons we don’t like to see him go, but we understand it’s time for him to move on. To keep dreaming. And where better to do it than in your theater. Trust me, I know.

“Please take good care of Donny and help him dream. Enjoy the future.”
