Gemma delves into the appeal of Fall boys and why it has been so well received and loved by game fans.
If you’re into remote video games, you’ve heard Fall boys mentioned in non-stop conversation this month.
For those who do not know Fall Boys It consists of a variety of mini-games including obstacle courses, races and team games. You compete against 60 other players in a Battle Royale format, and after each minigame, people are eliminated, until a final round of around 10 players. The last one standing wins.
Developed by British studio Mediatonic and released by Devolver Digital for PC and Playstation platforms on August 4th, this small and simple game has conquered the world and has become one of the most played and watched games on Twitch. At one point, it even had more viewers than Fortnite! But what makes it so popular?
PRICES
First of all, the obvious: this August, Fall boys it was free for everyone with a PS plus subscription. There’s no reason not to try a free game – everyone loves not having to spend money! Since the PS plus subscription is so popular with the huge PS4 player base, many gamers were able to take advantage of this offer.
7 million copies have been sold on Steam
The game costs just £ 15.99 on Steam, quite cheap compared to the standard triple-A price of $ 60. 7 million copies have been sold on Steam, and in just over a week Fall boys it had become the third most popular game on the service. So many people wanted to play the game on PlayStation that they went offline to repair it. Therefore, the low price was a major factor in boosting the empire that Fall Guys built over the last month.
ACCESSIBILITY
I think a massive factor in Fall boys The popularity is that you don’t have to be a serious gamer to enjoy it. Anyone can play Fall boysSkill levels aside, you just have to master jumping, diving and grabbing other players. On the other hand, serious gamers will enjoy a more cheerful, colorful and nostalgic break from intense games.
It’s the kind of game that doesn’t require you to spend hours, days, or weeks mastering complex skills or completing a complicated story. Instead, you can get in and out of a game of Fall boys in about 20 minutes (assuming you make it to the final round, that is, if you have a habit of being eliminated in the first round, it will be much faster!). This means that it is an easy game to play with friends.
Fall boys is such a simple concept, combining a modern Battle-Royale setup similar to Fortnite – we all know how popular it continues to be – longingly for simpler childhood days playing games like Mario Kart. The controls are easy to master, the rules for each obstacle course ‘minigame’ are simple, clear and easy to remember, but still have a high level of competitiveness as you try to reach the finish line before up to 60 other players, including your own friends. People are eliminated after each round until the last player standing wins.
It’s easy to fall in love and get addicted to competitive games like this; You just can’t stop playing until you get that victory! Also, every time you win, you get a crown. These crowns can be exchanged in the shop for new and creative skins for your character.
CHARACTERS AND VISUALS
Speaking of the characters, I think they are one of the reasons why the game became so popular. The owner of Mediatonic stated: “We are delighted with the response and cannot believe how dear our little candies have become!” Games with character customization and different skins are always popular – people love to have control over their appearance, so being able to dress up as a dinosaur, a chicken, a pineapple, the list goes on, was meant to make the game will win fan-base.
The visuals in a game are key to its success, and the little ‘candy’ from Mediatonic is adorable. They are brightly colored and aesthetically pleasing, adding to the nostalgic vibe of the game.. Fall boys it is more visually appealing and friendly in appearance than other currently popular games.
NOSTALGIA AND TONE
I think in times like 2020, nostalgia can be a major factor in the appeal of a game, hence the Nintendo Switch and games like Animal crossing (another game with adorable characters and a nostalgic vibe) has seen a surge in popularity.
Instead of redoing old games that we used to play as kids, lately we like a lot of releases, Fall boys It’s a completely new concept, never done before, but still capturing that aspect of nostalgia that comforts gamers; reminding us of simpler times of our childhood. This rare mix of the new and exciting, with the nostalgic at the same time. It’s been called the ‘perfect game for the coronavirus era’ for a reason!
It’s refreshing to see such a joyful and peaceful game become so popular.
Mike Wilson, co-founder of publisher Devolver Digital, said Fall boys “Hopefully it will inspire other developers and publishers to bring more joyful, non-violent, but still competitive games to the world.” I have to agree with him: it’s refreshing to see a game as lighthearted and non-violent as this one become so popular, as the most popular games typically have violent tendencies. Of course, there is nothing wrong with those violent games, they are extremely fun, but it is definitely good to see something different reach the same heights of popularity, especially after the dark year 2020.
Simplicity is key and Fall boys has mastered it. I just hope it continues to be as popular as it is now, and hopefully (fingers crossed!) It will launch on a wider range of platforms soon!
