Analysis of more than 557 million broadband speed tests around the world has revealed that the UK is now ranked 47th, with an average speed of 37.82 Mbps.
Cable.co.uk’s research places the UK ahead of 174 countries, but behind 46 others, behind 21 countries in Western Europe. This places the UK among the slowest in the region in terms of average broadband speed, losing 13 places since measurements were taken last year.
To put things in perspective, 32 of the 50 fastest performing countries are in Europe, with six in Asia, seven in the Caribbean region, three in North America, and one in Oceania and Central America. By contrast, 32 of the 50 lowest performing countries are in Sub-Saharan or North Africa, five in Asia, five in the Near East, three in the CIS region (former USSR), three in Oceania and one in the Americas. of the South and in the Caribbean region. The United States is ranked 20th overall with an average download speed of 71.3 Mbps.
109 countries failed to achieve average speeds of 10 Mbps or more, the speed considered by the UK telecom regulator Ofcom to be the minimum necessary to meet the needs of a typical family or small business.
Dan Howdle, Cable.co.uk Consumer Telecommunications Analyst, says:
While global broadband speeds continue to increase, the truth is that the fastest countries are the ones that increase the average, drift away at high speeds, and let the slower ones stagnate. Last year, we measured the five slowest countries at 125 times slower than the five fastest. This year they are 276 times slower. The slower countries are not slowing down, they just aren’t growing. While the fastest countries continue to accelerate year after year.
Europe absolutely dominates the rankings once again thanks to a largely excellent infrastructure. In all cases, the countries that rank highest are those with a strong focus on pure fiber networks (FTTP), and the countries that entertain themselves too much with FTTC and ADSL solutions are falling more and more year after year. .
