Samsung’s new Galaxy Z Fold2 was originally announced several weeks ago alongside the Note20 series, however the company had delayed the official launch of the phone until September. Well, September has arrived and Samsung is now ready to fully reveal the specs of the new flagship foldable phone and finally start taking pre-orders.

The new iteration is a major generational evolution over last year’s trouble-plagued Galaxy Fold, promising to markedly improve on some of the first design’s key weaknesses.

From a specs standpoint, the new Z Fold2 updates its hardware to Qualcomm’s newest Snapdragon 865+, which we’ve seen in many of the recent smartphone launches this summer.

Samsung opted to keep the RAM stable at 12GB and interestingly, we’ve seen a reduction in the storage department as the Z Fold2 comes with 256GB of UFS3.1 storage, half of the 512GB of the first Galaxy Fold.

Big updates include a new redesigned display with a more robust and better-performing hinge mechanism. The new screen grows to a 6.7 ”diagonal when unfolded, reaching a new resolution of 2208 x 1768.

Samsung here eliminated the big corner notch with the multiple front cameras, instead opting for a hole-punch camera in the right half of the internal screen. The camera module here is a 10MP unit with 1.22 µm pixels and f / 2.2 optics.

A larger screen upgrade has been made on the screen side of the phone cover, as the new screen grows from 4.6 “to 6.2”, with much less bezel around it. It’s a huge change in the look of the phone and makes the cover display that much more useful. Samsung also opted for a hole-punch camera at the top center of the panel, with a 10MP module identical to that of the internal front camera.

In terms of the rear-facing primary cameras, the main unit has undergone an upgrade to an identical module to the Galaxy S20 with a 12MP f / 1.76 ”sensor with 1.8µm pixels and f / 1.8 optics with OIS.

The Ultra Wide is a bit different from the original Fold in that it reduces its resolution from 16Mp to 12MP, but it retains the same sensor size; It is not the same unit as in the S20 and Note20 series. We still see a super wide field of view of 123 ° with an aperture of f / 2.2.

The telephoto unit has a 2x optical magnification and appears to be a continuation of the unit that we have seen in the original Fold, with a 12MP 1.0µm sensor and f / 2.4 optics with OIS.

Samsung promises several new software enhancements for this generation, making the experience smoother between different screens, as well as having extensive optimizations for simultaneous multitasking with multiple applications open at the same time.

The new Galaxy Z Fold2 is now open for pre-orders starting September 2 at an introductory price of $ 1999, with general availability starting September 25.th.
