Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Tuesday urged his compatriots to stand together after several crises, ranging from the armed insurgency in western Oromia, Tiger province defying the federal government and unemployment among youth.

In July, riots broke out in the country, resulting in the death of an unknown number of people who damaged property after the murder of Oromo singer and activist Hatchalu Hundessa.

Last week, the Tigray regional state government in northern Ethiopia proceeded to register voters who violated COVID-19 emergency guidelines. Elections in the country were originally scheduled for August. But the current government’s mandate has been extended for another 11 months due to the pandemic.

The armed insurgency in western Oromia, the country’s most populous region, has once again raised its head, while a splinter group from the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF), an outlawed party, has been fighting the government. The group was allowed to return to the country as part of the reconciliation adopted by Prime Minister Abiy shortly after he came to power in 2018.

“As a nation, we must have a common goal and goal. Ideas and polarized political movements must come to the center for the country to be successful in achieving its development and prosperity goals, ”she tweeted.

He said that hard-line ideas will only lead to a situation where time, resources and energy will be wasted.
