Windows 10 Update Causes Blue Screen of Death for These ThinkPad Laptops, Lenovo Warns

Lenovo has warned ThinkPad owners that the August 11, 2020 Patch Tuesday update for Windows 10 version 2004 is causing the Blue Screen of Deaths (BSOD) and breaking Windows Hello biometric login.

The issues affect Lenovo ThinkPads manufactured in 2019 and 2020 and, according to a Lenovo support article, stem from enhanced Windows biometric security settings in BIOS settings.

The bug appears in cumulative update KB566782 for Windows 10 version 2004, which included more than 100 security patches, as well as new security features for the operating system.

After installing KB566782, users may notice BSOD when booting, launching Lenovo Vantage to update drivers, or running a Windows Defender scan, according to Lenovo.

Other symptoms include not being able to log in using face authentication with Windows Hello, as well as errors in Device Manager that are related to both the Intel Management Engine CPU subsystem and the device’s infrared camera.

Fortunately Lenovo notes that there is a solution: “Disable Enhanced Windows Biometric Security Settings in BIOS Settings -> Security -> Virtualization Menu”.

As reported by WindowsLatest, Lenovo says that Microsoft has not implemented the software for this BIOS setting, so it can be safely disabled for now.

The error appears to occur when Lenovo’s Vantage application tries to use the Intel Management Engine to interact with the firmware, but is blocked by the BIOS settings and Microsoft’s Patch Tuesday update.

WindowsLatest spotted reports on Reddit a few weeks ago from Lenovo ThinkPad users about issues that Lenovo confirmed in their new support article. Reddit user epyon9283 reported issues with Microsoft’s optional preview versions and found that uninstalling Microsoft Hyper-V virtualization software solved the issue with those updates.

“19041.450 and 19041.423 (last month’s preview) break my Thinkpad X390 pretty badly when Hyper-V is installed,” wrote epyon9283.

“Windows Hello Camera stops working and machine BSOD when it goes to sleep or when trying to run Lenovo Vantage. Intel Management Engine interface device also stops working. If I uninstall Hyper-V, that’s fine. If I go back to 19041.423 it is also fine if Hyper-V is still installed. “
