A study published by Ethiopian Citizens for Social Justice (EZEMA) reveals that 210,000 square meters of land were illegally seized in the capital Addis Ababa. It was appropriated in the form of land grabs in five sub-cities, it was said.
The study was ongoing for more than two months in five Addis Ababa sub-cities and 25 locations. According to the party, residents of the city provided preliminary information for the party. Investigators conducted an interview and field trip, among other methods, to conclude that there had been a land grab and illegal transfer of condominium units.
EZEMA, one of the opposition parties in the country, also said that it has verified that the land grabbing occurred with the direct participation of government authorities as beneficiaries of the land grabbing agreements. The land grab targeted extensive parcels of land in the city, according to the party’s statement.
Months after coming to power, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed appointed, through a false back door, Takele Uma as mayor of Addis Ababa.
Illegal transfer of condominium units
EZEMA also conducted an investigation into an illegal transfer of condominium units in Addis Ababa. And the findings revealed that city residents who had signed up and saved money for condo units for more than fifteen years did not get a condo unit.
On the other hand, the condo units were transferred for people who were not registered or saved money for it. The transfers violated regulations promulgated for the distribution of condominium units built by the government. EZEMA added that the regulations were also modified in an effort to have a legal basis for the transfer of condominium units for people who would not otherwise qualify for it.
Action
EZEMA is calling on the government to hold officials responsible for the illegal transfer of condominium units and the illegal distribution of land.
This month, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed removed Takele Uma as the deputy mayor of Addis Ababa (actually acting as mayor) and replaced him with his close confidant, Adanech Abiebie.
However, residents have been demanding an elected mayor. Opposition parties such as Baladera for Genuine Democracy had been campaigning to expose illegal demolitions, land grabbing, and illegal transfer of condominium units in the city. Their leader Eskinder Nega has been jailed on trumped-up charges in connection with the latest massacre in Ethiopia’s Oromo region.
EZEMA’s report is notably outrageous to residents of the city and beyond.
The government of Abiy Ahmed has not yet responded to the accusation.
