Ubisoft Muddies PS1, PS2, PS3 Support Page Backward Compatibility Question

[ad_1]

The backward compatibility potential of the PlayStation 5 remains a mystery, as Sony has not confirmed or denied any support potential beyond PS4 games, but a recent and now updated support page from Ubisoft has further muddied. the waters over past generations of PS5. whether or not it will be potentially backward compatible.

A support question and answer page from Ubisoft, in response to a question about updating games from PS4 to PS5, as detected by Wario64 and confirmed by IGN, originally stated that “Backward compatibility will be available for titles PlayStation 4 compatible, but will not be possible for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2 or PlayStation games. ”

Since then, the page has been updated to remove any mention of compatibility with previous versions or previous generations of PlayStation hardware. He just goes on to mention the update process that carries over to the PS5, as well as that PS4 players will be able to play multiplayer games with PS5 players.

PS5 backward compatibility has been a murky topic for those looking forward to next-gen PlayStation hardware. Sony started talking about the potential for backward compatibility of the PS5 earlier this year, confirming that “most” PS4 games could be played on PS5. However, that confirmation came after an unclear first discussion about compatibility, in which Sony’s Mark Cerny seemed to imply that only the majority of the 100 best PS4 games would be playable. Sony then clarified with follow-ups that most of this generation is playable on the PS5, and that Cerny was only using the top 100 games as an example.

However, the company has not yet fully confirmed whether previous generations will be playable on PS5, a feature that is not included on the PS4, but that the Xbox Series X does promote parts of its library for all previous Xbox generations. And the patents that emerged earlier this year also suggested that PlayStation could support backward compatibility for those older systems via the cloud, leading many to expect games from Sony’s older consoles to be compatible. with PS5.

IGN has reached out to Sony to comment on whether the PS1 to PS3 libraries will be backward compatible on PS5 and they will update this story if they respond.

However, speaking of the cloud, Sony has an existing way of playing multiple generations of PlayStation games on PS4: PlayStation Now, its subscription streaming service, which includes PS2, PS3, and PS4 games. PS2 and PS4 games can even be downloaded to play offline. With PS Now looking to continue in the future, that could be a potential outlet for Sony to offer its old catalog, even if the system itself does not inherently offer backward compatibility with PSN discs or downloads.

The PlayStation 5 is still scheduled for a Christmas release, but the PS5 is not yet available to pre-order, however Sony is offering fans the opportunity to sign up to be the first to pre-order a PS5.
