Lyon extended their European dominance by beating Wolfsburg 3-1 to win their fifth straight Women’s Champions League title on Sunday.

Eugénie Le Sommer, Saki Kumagai and Sara Bjork Gunnarsdóttir all scored for Lyon to clinch a record-setting seventh Champions League trophy.

Wolfsburg, seeking its third title after consecutive wins in 2013 and 2014, took the board with Alex Popp after his French rival opened a two-goal lead in the first half.

Wolfsburg also lost the final to Lyon in 2016 and 2018.

Le Sommer opened the scoring in the 25th minute before Kumagai increased the lead shortly before the break.

Gunnarsdóttir sealed the win in the 88th after Popp put Wolfsburg on the scoreboard in the 58th.

“We played a great season, we can be proud and I can be proud to be part of this team,” said Popp.

Le Sommer, Wendie Renard and Sarah Bouhaddi of Lyon each won their seventh European title, beating them one of Paco Gento’s men’s record.

“It is actually quite difficult to believe that we have achieved our fifth title in a row, to be honest,” said Bouhaddi. “We are very proud of ourselves, it was a very difficult competition.”

It was the fourth final between the two clubs, and the third in the last five years. Wolfsburg’s only win over Lyon came in the first final between the teams in 2013.

It was Wolfsburg’s first defeat in 41 games, since a 4-2 home defeat in the Champions League quarter-finals against Lyon in March 2019. Lyon have yet to lose a competitive match since the final of the French Cup against Paris Saint-Germain in May 2018.

In the semi-finals of the mini-tournament of the eighth final played without fans in northern Spain, Lyon beat PSG and Wolfsburg beat Barcelona.

The final was played at the Real Sociedad Anoeta Stadium in the Basque city of San Sebastián. The San Mamés stadium of Athletic Bilbao also hosted matches.
