Sony has said that it will continue to release its own PlayStation games on PC.
In its 2020 corporate report, Sony talked about the future of PlayStation and of course the upcoming PlayStation 5 release. Buried within the generic and non-binding notes is a single nugget: confirmation that Sony will release more of its games. on PC.
PlayStation has largely ignored the PC, focusing instead on creating exclusives for its consoles. While its marketing for PS5 has bolstered the idea of console exclusives, Sony has begun to dabble in putting its PlayStation games on PC, with the launch of the PS4-exclusive Horizon Zero Dawn on Steam in August 2020.
“We will explore expanding our proprietary titles to the PC platform, in order to promote further growth in our profitability,” Sony said in its report.
That means more PlayStation exclusives are coming to PC. But what? Media Molecule’s Dreams seems like a safe bet. But could people like Insomniac’s Spider-Man be coming to Steam? Will games announced as PS5 exclusives like Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and Horizon Forbidden West coming to PC too?
In March 2020, the head of PlayStation Worldwide Studios, Hermen Hulst, explained the decision to port Horizon to PC, saying that it was about introducing PlayStation to more people.
“I think it’s important that we stay open to new ideas on how to introduce PlayStation to more people and show people perhaps what they have been missing,” he said.
However, Hulst insisted that Sony does not intend to follow Microsoft’s lead and release all of its games on PC and console at the same time.
“And perhaps to reassure some, releasing an AAA title for PC does not necessarily mean that all games will now come to PC,” he said.
“In my opinion, Horizon Zero Dawn was a perfect fit for this particular case. We have no plans for the day and date. [PC releases]and we remain 100% committed to dedicated hardware. “
