Ubisoft to remove raised black fist footage from Tom Clancy’s Elite squad after controversy

Ubisoft has decided to remove the images of the raised black fist from the Tom Clancy’s Elite Squad intro as it has been deemed “insensitive and harmful” and appears to connect a fictional terrorist group called the Umbra with the Black Lives Matter movement.
Ubisoft posted their statement on Twitter, and confirmed that it will remove these “raised fist” images from Tom Clancy’s Elite Squad in the next title update on Tuesday September 1 on Android and “as soon as possible on iOS”.

“The footage that appeared in the Tom Clancy’s Elite Squad opening video sequence with a ‘raised fist’ was insensitive and damaging both in its inclusion and in the way it was portrayed,” the Ubisoft tweet reads. “We have listened and appreciated from players and the community at large who have brought this up and we apologize. These ‘fist up’ images will be removed in the next title update this Tuesday, September 1 on Android and as soon as possible on iOS . “

In the Elite Squad introductory video, the narrator describes Umbra, this fictional terrorist group, as “a new threat has emerged to take advantage of escalating civil unrest.” He goes on to call them a “faceless organization that wants to build a new world order.”

When the narrator says “They intend to promote an egalitarian utopia to win popular support”, the “raised fists” in question appear. The raised fist has been used for many years as a symbol of revolution, and more recently it has been used by members of the Black Lives Matter movement in the fight against police brutality and systemic racism.

This controversy is another for Ubisoft, a company that has been grappling with the consequences of multiple sexual allegations against some of its employees.

Ubisoft has committed to making “major changes” and is putting systems in place to ensure these issues do not recur.
