Doom Eternal’s new Ancient Gods expansion is taking a fresh approach to DLC and it could spell big changes from Bethesda.
The latest Ancient Gods Part I expansion for Doom Eternal is a completely standalone episode that can be purchased alone and played without the base game. Anyone can buy and play it even if they don’t own the full release of Doom Eternal. The news was confirmed in a press release – the expansion will also come with battle mode included for free, which makes perfect sense for Bethesda.
“For players who do not own the Year One Pass, The Ancient Gods, Part One will be available to purchase separately and will include free access to BATTLEMODE. Players do not need to have DOOM Eternal to purchase and play The Ancient Gods, Part One,” read the press release.
This move is really smart. Not many people usually buy post-launch DLC due to the higher costs of the Deluxe Editions and having to spend more money on the base game and the DLC itself. Selling the DLC alone will be a bit confusing when it comes to lore and campaign, but it’s a great opportunity to open up more sales opportunities.
id Software also explained why they made this decision.
“It’s important because we want the DLC to reach as many people as possible. In fact, you don’t even need to own Doom Eternal to buy the DLC and play.” Marty Stratton said PCGamesN.
Creative Director Hugo Martin sees The Ancient Ones as more than just an expansion. It’s just as chaotic and over the top as the base game.
“Most people would associate downloadable content with a smaller scope; it’s like the made-for-TV version of the movie, and the movie was the main game. For us, this is a lot like a two-part movie: it’s each a bit as great as the main game. “
The Ancient Ones Part 1 expansion for Doom Eternal launches on October 20, 2020 for $ 19.99.
