Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang picked up where he left off at Wembley, scoring another surprising goal, this time against Premier League champions Liverpool.

The Arsenal captain played the leading role in his team’s FA Cup triumph earlier this month, scoring two goals against Manchester City and Chelsea as the Gunners’ season ended with some unexpected titles.

Aubameyang is expected to sign a new deal and pledge his future alongside Mikel Arteta, but he has yet to sign on the dotted line.

The 31-year-old again underscored his importance to the club with a spectacular starter, picking up a pass from Bukayo Saka and doubling a superb shot past Alisson Becker from the edge of the penalty area.

Aubameyang celebrated with a tribute to Chadwick Boseman, the Hollywood actor whose tragic death was confirmed early Saturday, and the goal was also well received in Spain by his former teammate Dani Ceballos.

The Spaniard spent last season on loan at Arsenal and, although Mikel Arteta hopes his compatriot will return from Real Madrid, Real Betis have become the favorites.

Ceballos, whose influence at Arsenal grew toward the end of last season, was clearly impressed with Aubameyang’s efforts, responding to a well-crafted goal clip with a series of emojis.

Meanwhile, speaking about the possibility of Ceballos returning to North London, Arteta said earlier this week: ‘Well, we’ve had some conversations and Dani knows very well what I think of him.

“ He also made it quite clear to me that his intention was to stay with us, but obviously Real Madrid is involved and I still don’t know what they want to do with the player.

“But he is a player that interests us because we really saw, in the last months of the season, what he is capable of contributing to us.”
