Staying true to its word, Apple has now canceled Epic Games’ developer account on its App Store. The move comes after an ongoing legal battle between the tech giant and video game developer and publisher by Fortnite and its omission of the App Store for in-game transactions, of which Apple typically takes 30 percent. The ending now means that Fortnite It will no longer be available in the digital store, and those who have already downloaded the game will not be able to update it beyond August 28.
Apple issued the following statement regarding the termination:
“We are disappointed that we had to cancel the Epic Games account on the App Store. We have worked with the Epic Games team for many years on their releases and launches. The court recommended that Epic abide by the App Store guidelines as their case progresses, guidelines they have followed for the past decade until they created this situation. Epic has refused. Instead, they repeatedly send out Fortnite updates designed to violate App Store guidelines. This isn’t fair to every other developer on the App Store and it’s putting customers in the middle of their fight. We look forward to working together again in the future, but unfortunately that is not possible today. “
Notably, Apple’s new move does not affect the other Epic account used to maintain its Unreal Engine, as a judge said earlier this week to block this alternate account in order to retaliate. Fortnite it would seem “an overreach”.
