The Google Assistant gets a new feature that makes it easy to donate money to leading nonprofit and humanitarian organizations, starting with the Center for Policing Equity, an organization that works to promote transparency and police accountability.
The news was announced today to coincide with the 57th anniversary of the March on Washington. For now, the new donation shortcut is only accessible on mobile phones, either by saying “Ok Google, donate to racial justice”, the Assistant (either directly on Android or via the app on iOS) or using a card dedicated on the Google Assistant Daily snapshot view.
Google says it will not take a cut from donations made through Assistant, with 100 percent of all donations transferred directly to the Center for Policing Equity. The company also plans to expand the Google Assistant donation function to support “other humanitarian and nonprofit organizations” in the coming weeks, though Google has yet to say which organizations it has chosen.
While the addition of a donation feature is certainly admirable, it is important to note that the news does not include any other monetary commitment from Google to donate to combat racial inequality beyond the $ 175 million that the company had already. promised in June.
