Just over five years after NextVR broadcast its first live virtual reality broadcast from California to my home in Michigan, Apple confirmed that it is acquiring the startup. While Apple has already incorporated AR features on some of its platforms, rumors of a further boost to augmented reality or virtual reality have remained mere rumors.

In the past few years, NextVR highlights have included concert, golf and NBA broadcasts. Still, the slow adoption of virtual reality means that only a few people could see, and phone-based headsets like the one I used in 2015 have lagged behind. All I can hope for now is that Apple’s move will be remembered as one that helped deliver quality virtual reality experiences to the masses, and not just another example of promising technology acquisition and storage forever.
