With a new iPhone 8-inspired design, the iPhone SE 2020 boasts many improvements over the 2016 original. For anyone on the previous model who is considering upgrading, here is everything Apple packed into its new budget phone.
When Apple released the iPhone SE in 2016, it featured a design very similar to other iPhone 5-era devices. Metal body, flat beveled edges, and a four-inch display. Now the iPhone SE has grown. It features an iPhone 8-inspired design with rounded aluminum edges and an upgraded 4.7-inch screen.
The new screen of the iPhone SE versus the original
The new screen is not just bigger. Apple also updated it in several other ways, making it a huge step forward in quality over the previous design.
This new Retina display still retains the same 326PPI, but is otherwise completely new. It has a contrast ratio of 1400: 1 from 800: 1 on the previous model, and 625 nits of brightness from 500 nits.
The iPhone SE 2020 supports True Tone and the wide P3 color gamut, and the original (obviously) does not. Haptic Touch is also here this time, allowing you to preview links, open context menus, and more.
A big step forward in cameras
There are big differences in image quality between the two cameras, as you might suspect.
The updated iPhone SE is using a new image sensor with better six-element lenses from five, and a wider f / 1.8 aperture from f / 2.2. It features Smart HDR that can automatically enable or disable, record stereo audio for video, and has built-in video stabilization.
The iPhone SE 2016 could record slow motion video at 1080p at 120fps and at 720 at 240fps. The updated model can now also shoot in slow motion at 240fps at 1080p.
Another big difference is the compatibility with portrait mode, although the iPhone SE only has a rear lens. The camera also has an improved dynamic range when recording videos at up to 30 frames per second and can record 4K at 60 frames per second.
The front camera was also updated. He went from a 1.2MP camera to a 7MP camera. It can record 1080p video (up to 720p), it has a wider f / 2.2 aperture, wide color capture, image and video stabilization, and portrait mode with depth control.
A new iPhone SE
Other changes for the iPhone SE (2020) include IP67 water resistance, Qi wireless charging thanks to the new glass back, increased storage capacities, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5 and Dual-SIM support.
Both devices still have the touch ID start button. The 2016 version has a physical button, while the 2020 model went into solid state with haptic feedback that provides the click feeling. This is notable because the physical button mechanism is much more prone to failure than the solid state one. Apple designed this phone to last, and changes like that are important.
Part of that long life is the internal processor. It is the new A13 Bionic processor that circles around the A9 found in 2016. This is the same chip that Apple uses in the iPhone 11 Pro line, making it more likely to be compatible for many years to come.
