The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has warned of the return of desert locust in East Africa, which threatens to push starvation to tens of millions of people.
In a report released Monday, the organization noted that in East Africa and Yemen, the food crisis caused by the locust infestation is far from over.
As the weather continues to be favorable, large swarms of locusts will become adults in June. The organization warns that the food crisis will affect more than 25 million people in East Africa in the second half of 2020.
Since the beginning of this year, the insect has damaged large areas of crops in almost 20 countries in East Africa, West Africa, West Asia and South Asia.
Meanwhile, the current coronavirus pandemic poses another challenge in countries’ fight against locusts, as it has restricted the transport of pesticides and other materials necessary to control plague.
Desert locusts can devour leaves, flowers, fruit, seeds, and even trees in their path. A swarm of just one square kilometer can hold around 40 million lobsters and eat as much food as 35,000 people in one day.
