Horn of Africa: SNA claims to attack al Shabaab meetings in the Lower Shabelle and Middle Jubba regions of Somalia; KDF establishes plan to withdraw troops from Somalia

Yemen security summary:

Forces aligned with the internationally recognized Yemeni government of Abdu Rabbu Mansour Hadi alleged that they had rejected al-Houthi’s advances in the Al Tahita district of the Hudaydah governorate in western Yemen on May 13. the 12th of May.[1]

Hadi government forces reportedly attacked Al Houthi militants in Al Fakher, in the Dhaleh governorate in southern Yemen, on 12 May, killing two Al Houthi militants and injuring one. Al Houthi militants previously clashed with southern Yemen resistance forces in Al Fakher in late April.[2]

Horn of Africa Security Summary:

The Somali National Army (SNA) claimed to attack al-Shabaab meetings in the Jamame and Hawiye districts in the Lower Shabelle region of southern Somalia and in Jilib in the Middle Jubba region of southern Somalia in mid-May. The SNA claimed to have killed two al-Shabaab commanders and six militants. The United States African Command carried out an airstrike near Jilib in early April, killing five al-Shabaab militants.[3]

The Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) established a multi-step plan to withdraw their troops from Somalia. These steps include strengthening the SNA, managing security threats along the Kenya-Somalia border, coordinating with Somalia and Ethiopia on security, and working with communities to combat violent extremism. The KDF and all the forces of the African Union Mission in Somalia are expected to withdraw their troops from Somalia in late 2021.[4]
