MOGADISHU, May 13 (Xinhua) – The Somali Health Ministry confirmed 49 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, bringing the total number of infections to 1,219.
Fawziya Abikar, the health minister said four people recovered from COVID-19, bringing the total number of people who had been discharged from hospitals to 130.
The minister said that no person succumbed to the disease, as the death toll remained at 52.
The minister said 38 of the latest cases are men, while another 11 are women.
The surge in COVID-19 cases comes at a time when Somalia faces heavy flooding and a threat of desert locust infestation, and the World Health Organization said it has intensified response efforts to trace contacts in Somalia. by deploying some 4,000 community health workers across the country.
The UN health agency also warned that if the transmission of the virus does not slow down quickly, the increase in patients and the growing demand for medical care may overwhelm the country’s fragile health system.
