Some 50,000 people in southern Ethiopia are displaced by flash floods that followed a heavy rain.

People are displaced in the West Giji area of the Oromia region around the Gelana area, according to the report by state broadcaster ETV. One of the flood victims said they experience similar floods each year. “… We are losing our assets, including livestock and their grazing lands … The problem continues to occur because we do not have enough infrastructure in place. Now we are concerned,” he said.

A woman who is also among the flood victims, also urged the government to build roads and drainage systems in the area to avoid a similar tragedy in the future. She said that even though villagers have been asking the government to protect them from such a catastrophe by building the infrastructure, they have so far failed to find a solution.

A representative of the local administration indicated that the government is working to provide food and temporary shelter to the more than 50,000 displaced people in the area.

Media reports show that floods have killed people in East Africa, mainly Kenya and Ethiopia, in recent weeks.
