Apple updates second-generation AirPods firmware to version 2D15

A week after launching a new firmware update for AirPods Pro, Apple has released the same firmware to the second generation AirPods, updating them from the previous 2A364 firmware to the new 2D15 firmware.

Apple did not make clear what is new in the updated firmware at this time, and the owners of irAirPods Pro‌ had mixed reactions to the update, with some saying that Active Noise Cancellation improved and others finding it did not.

Second-generation ‌AirPods‌ have no active noise cancellation, so it is unknown what enhancements are included in the firmware. PAirPods‌ firmware updates often provide performance improvements, bug fixes, and feature tweaks. This software update is likely to correct the bug that caused some customers who were sent a replacement AirPod with unreleased firmware to be unable to use them as they would have to upgrade the firmware from 2D3 to 2D15, allowing them to re-pair with the existing PAirPods.

You can check which firmware your PAirPods‌ have installed by following these steps:

  1. Make sure the irAirPods‌‌‌ are connected to your iOS device.
  2. Open the setup app.
  3. Tap General.
  4. Tap About.
  5. Tap ‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌.
  6. Look at the number next to “Firmware version”.

Apple has not provided explicit instructions to customers on how to initiate a firmware update, but activating PAirPods‌ with audio and then placing them in the case and connecting them to a power source appears to be a reliable way to force an update.

Apple released the 2C54 firmware update in December, but later withdrew it, so it’s worth noting that some people who immediately updated have the 2C54 firmware while others are still on 2A364.
