Last year, Huawei launched its flagship P30 Pro smartphone, which comes with Android 9 Pie. However, the United States government put a key to the Chinese company’s plans by imposing trade restrictions that meant Huawei would not be able to use the American-made components or software that it had come to trust. But since the P30 Pro was released before Huawei was put on the “Entity List”, the company can re-launch the phone with Android 10 preloaded. Called the P30 Pro New Edition, the phone will be out on June 1, at least in Germany, and will cost € 749 (about $ 815) for the 256GB model. The company has not yet announced availability for other European or North American markets.
While Huawei released more phones from the P30 Pro, those models haven’t included Google’s Android version. Rather, they use AOSP, which is based on the Android source code, but excludes Google’s own features and applications. The drastically lower sales numbers indicate that the move could be a big detour for users, so it appears that the company expects the tradeoff between older hardware and newer software to be a happy medium.
