The role of the nursing fraternity is more important than ever during the current pandemic. Nurses around the world have tirelessly participated in the care of patients with COVID-19 and are focused on prioritizing infection prevention and control among patients, assistants, and healthcare providers in all units within the hospital.

In the recent past, we have already witnessed the many ways that nurses have contributed, adapted, and taken the initiative to tackle the pandemic. Many nurses are key pillars in updating intervention management through national and international webinars that were specifically introduced during the COVID-19 period. However, that’s just his role behind the scenes. Due to their work on the front line, caregivers (those who care for these patients) are at high risk of contracting the coronavirus since their exposure is high.

When the nurses come on duty, many emotions come into play. As a caregiver, the profession requires caring for patients selflessly as someone at the center of infection prevention – the slightest mistake can end up making things go wrong for the hospital and family as well.

And yet the fear of contracting the disease is constant. While caring for patients with COVID-19, many nurses expose themselves and need to be quarantined, which is an additional mental and physical cost to an individual. As the medical fraternity struggles to manage test kits and personal protective equipment (PPE), care providers work tirelessly to help patients, regardless of all fears and lack of resources.

We have empowered our nurses with the best knowledge and skills to manage themselves during these trying times, giving them the option to seek help from experts in mental health issues. Even the simplest of gestures of being there with the team, a little pat on the back and listening to their fears and anxieties has helped them navigate. The plan focuses on staying connected, improving and sharing awareness about preventing the spread of infection, while also emphasizing the individual safety of nurses. We have stepped up online sessions and campaigns to highlight life skills and functional aspects of COVID-19 management.

While the primary response to the pandemic has been fear of imminent danger due to misinformation / information circulating everywhere, nurses are on the front lines of communication, whether to debunk myths, counsel patients, and their families and even handle the end of -care of life.

We are collaborating with the clinical team, sharing insights and actionable steps at management meetings for the COVID-19 response. In fact, it’s a triple duty for a nurse: managing patients, responding to COVID-19, and taking care of yourself.
