The high price of the Galaxy S20 Ultra may have forced many buyers to consider the Galaxy S20 + as a more affordable alternative. In many cases, the two Samsung flagships are basically identical. Its biggest difference lies in its cameras with the Galaxy S20 Ultra that carries everything that Samsung could fit. Many reviewers including DxOMark found it to be quite overkill and have taken a look at the slightly smaller Galaxy S20 + to see if it offers a better balance.
To cut the story short, the Galaxy S20 + ‘s 118 score means it is very good, at 10th place on the DxOMark list. Taken in isolation, that may be enough to convince some consumers, but also keep in mind that, with the exception of the Galaxy S20 Ultra, all the phones on top are from Chinese brands. Some of them are even considerably cheaper than the Galaxy S20 +.
The comparison between the Galaxy S20 + and the Galaxy S20 Ultra will be inevitable but a little unfair. The Galaxy S20 + ‘s 12 megapixel main camera produces accurate exposure but loses detail when compared to the massive 108 megapixel Galaxy S20 Ultra. There’s no periscope-style telephoto here either, so the 3x hybrid optical zoom is as bad as it sounds. Fortunately, the two phones share the same ultra-wide-angle camera and the same depth sensor, giving the same panoramic shots and stunning bokehs.
The phone’s video recording capabilities are a bit unusual. It can record in 8K at 24 fps, but it uses the 64 megapixel telephoto camera which has a narrower field of view. The main camera shoots at 4K 60fps, but it has more in sight. Performance is what you would expect from a lower megapixel sensor, which provides good exposure even in low light but limited dynamic range in high contrast scenes.
DxOMark concludes that the Galaxy S20 + is definitely a good camera phone, which is what you would expect from its $ 1,200 price. It doesn’t reach the Galaxy S20 Ultra’s scores, but it also avoids the high price. It would definitely be a good purchase decision if there were no people like Xiaomi and OPPO or even Honor available at lower prices.
