TPLF-will-not-hold-separate-electionsMay 9, 2020 (Ezega.com) – A member of the executive committee of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) said that the state of Tigray will not hold elections separately from the rest of Ethiopia.

“We will not make an irresponsible and far-fetched decision to hold regional elections amid coronavirus infections and the political crisis facing the country,” the executive committee member told local media on condition of anonymity.

Last week, TPLF in a resolution said it is preparing to hold elections next August against the decision passed by the federal parliament to postpone the general elections due to the coronavirus pandemic.

According to the executive member, the information that is being disseminated about the fact that TPLF is preparing to hold the elections is unfounded, rather it aims to harm TPLF and the people of Tigray.

“We never negotiated on the peoples’ rights to self-administration for which the people of Tigray along with other peoples of Ethiopia had fought. Therefore, we defend the Ethiopian constitution more than anyone else, ”said the executive committee member.

The executive committee member said, however, that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is becoming an increasingly dictator in violation of the constitution and that must be rectified.

In a recent interview with the Tigray Media Agency, Getachew Reda, who is also a member of the TPLF executive committee, said: “Nothing can prevent TPLF from holding elections in the Tigray region and the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia ( NEBE) has no role in the fairness of the election, except the sending of electoral materials. “

Getachew said that neither TPLF nor the regional government decided to hold the elections in Tigray state. The misinformation was released by a political group in Addis Ababa that promised to take a measure.

The flawed information was part of a campaign to isolate the Tigray people from other Ethiopian towns and stain the TPLF.

Meanwhile, Ethiopia has reported 16 new cases, two recoveries and one more death due to coronavirus infection as of mid-Saturday.

Of the 2,383 samples taken in 24 hours, 16 people tested positive for the virus, the Ethiopian Ministry of Health said in a statement.

All confirmed cases are Ethiopian citizens in their 20s and 60s, he said.

Two of the confirmed cases have a history of traveling abroad, while the other cases had contact with previously confirmed cases, he added.

A 65-year-old man from Addis Ababa has died from the virus, increasing the number of deaths from the coronavirus in the country to five, the statement said.

Two patients have recovered from the virus within 24 hours, bringing the total number of recoveries to 97.
