Marcus Rashford says he likes the freedom to mix up his Manchester United roles, and admits life has been difficult for him when he plays as a center forward.
The England striker has generally been seen coming out of the left since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s appointment as United coach, with Anthony Martial generally taking the role in the middle.
Rashford’s ability to cut inside from the left and shoot with the right foot is crucial here, and provides an incisive attack weapon for United.
Crucially, he also says it’s a role he likes to play whenever he gets a chance.
“When you’re on the left, you can create a lot more stuff on your own, giving the team a little bit more,” Rashford told the UTD Podcast.
“Whereas when you play front, sometimes you’re isolated and you need someone in midfield who can find passes for 90 minutes of a game, so you can disappear in games sometimes as number nine.”
“When I transitioned to number nine when I was younger, that was the part I struggled with, as I was always someone who wanted to express myself on the ball.”
“When I started playing number nine, I realized that you don’t see the ball as often as in other positions, but when you do see it, it’s an opportunity to score goals.”
“That’s what I loved about being a number nine and that’s what I still love. But right now I’m enjoying having the freedom to mix between the two, and I think it suits us right now as Anthony [Martial] he likes to move to the left and fall deeply too. “
