Ethiopia stripped of 63 mining licenses on the Ministry of Mining and Petroleum described as “poor performance”. According to state media, EBC, 38 of the companies that lost their licenses were engaged in extraction and production, while the rest were said to be engaged in research.

It is the former acting mayor of the city of Addis Ababa, Takele Uma, who was implicated in acts of corruption related to the illegal transfer of land and condominium units, who is currently in charge of the Ministry of Mining and Oil.

It is not clear how his ministry measured the performance of companies whose licenses are now canceled.

One of the first actions taken by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government in the sector in May 2018, just a month after taking power, was to suspend the gold mining license of the Saudi-born Ethiopian billionaire for alleged reasons of “environmental Protection”. However, it was clear that the gold mining issue was politicized in the Oromo region of Ethiopia.

Meanwhile, Takele Uma claims that his ministry made more than $ 302 million from the sector in the last five months. He is quoted as saying that 4,083 kilograms of gold were exported of which Ethiopia earned $ 299 million.
