After months of rumors, it seems that Apple will finally introduce a package of services. A text string discovered in the Apple Music app on Android devices contains a curious reference to “Apple One”, which just so happens to be the rumored name for Apple’s service pack, so unless an Apple engineer have fun at our expense, we can expect the bundled levels to arrive very soon, possible at the Time Flies event on Tuesday.
But while the lower prices will certainly help attract people to services they might not otherwise subscribe to, Apple is going to need more than monthly savings to entice people to sign up for Apple One. Here’s what we hope to see.
A really low price
It goes without saying that a subscription to Apple One will be cheaper than subscribing to each service alone. But if the Apple One bundle is to be a hit, it must be very cheap, like no more than $ 30 for Apple Music, Apple TV +, Apple News +, Apple Arcade, and 2TB of iCloud storage. That’s $ 15 in monthly savings and it would make Apple One a serious deal and a great way to get people to bet on Apple services.
Subscriber benefits
A lower price is good, but Apple One subscribers should also get benefits that you can’t get elsewhere. For example, Google One offers savings on hotels, as well as lower priced movie rentals and digital credit on Google Store purchases. And when iCloud was .Mac / MobileMe, subscribers got the occasional giveaway like free games, Apple Store credit, and free photo prints. A few extra perks with an Apple One subscription, like maybe double the cash back when using an Apple Card, would go a long way toward getting people to sign up.
2 TB iCloud storage
The most frustrating thing about owning an Apple device is the meager 5GB storage that you get with an Apple ID. That’s barely enough to back up a device and with the whole family sharing space, even 200GB can quickly disappear. For the Apple One to be worth it, Apple needs to include 2TB of iCloud storage, enough to make sure even the most demanding users never run out of space.
Android support
It’s certainly intriguing that the Apple One bundle has basically been confirmed in the Android app. While it might mean nothing, since Apple Music is already available on Android and probably uses a lot of the same code as the iOS app, it could signal the opening of more Apple services to Android users. Specifically, Apple TV + and iCloud Drive are missing from the Play Store, and a new Apple One bundle would be a great excuse to offer one for all cross-platform users.
No more device limits
Whether you have a personal account or a family account for Apple Music, Apple limits you to logging into just 10 devices, which can be problematic if you have a family that uses a lot of iPhones, iPads, and Macs. An Apple One subscription should dispense with the limits and allow you to install Apple Music on as many devices as you want, even if you keep simultaneous streaming of six devices.
