Rockstar Games has big plans for GTA in the second half of 2021, but not in the way people expected from 2020 onwards.
During the PS5 reveal event, Rockstar revealed its plans for the GTA franchise in 2021, with a relaunch of Grand Theft Auto 5 in an announced “Enhanced and Expanded” edition.
Additionally, GTA Online would become a standalone title, standalone from Grand Theft Auto 5, and will be available for purchase. The game will also be free for the first 3 months on next-gen consoles, which is a small gift to Rockstar.
However, gamers have spent almost seven years with GTA Online and they know all that Rockstar has to offer. So if developers want to build buzz, they will have to make some radical changes and additions to the game experience.
5 Features Rockstar Should Add To GTA Online In 2021
# 1 More Solo Heists
The latest update to the GTA Online title introduced players to the first hit of the game that could be played solo. This means that players will no longer have to wait on matchmaking, waiting to be matched with players of equal abilities and skills.
Maybe Rockstar can go back and make every hit in the game playable on its own. While heists have always been a very co-op-focused experience, slow matchmaking and massive load times tend to get in the way.
With improved hardware in next-gen consoles, much of the loading times can be alleviated. Rockstar will have to work hard on matchmaking though, as he remains one of the game’s biggest naysayers.
# 2 Cayo Perico available in free mode
The entire GTA community roared with excitement when they learned that the “brand new location” would actually be a substantially large island. Almost immediately afterwards, they let out a collective sigh upon learning that the island could only be partially explored during the prep missions and the heist itself.
It certainly appears that Rockstar has plans for the island, but is not yet comfortable revealing them. As we get closer to the launch of GTA Online as a standalone title, perhaps the developers could open the island in Free mode, outside of the Beach Party area that players can currently visit.
Cayo Perico Island presents a great opportunity for Rockstar to expand the gaming experience far beyond its current state.
# 3 Procedurally generated missions
This might be a totally contentious point for some, but the idea that GTA could have procedurally generated missions is certainly interesting.
There’s a lot to do in Freemode, like VIP / CEO work, but the idea of a set of missions that changes every time you play them is intriguing.
RPGs and dungeon crawlers or even games like No Man’s Sky have been successful thanks to procedurally generated systems, just like GTA.
It could even help solve a lot of farming / milling problems for players and help beginners accumulate a lot of wealth through these missions.
# 4 more story mode crossovers
Miguel Madrazo was the last member of the Madrazo family to appear in GTA Online. Fan favorites Trevor, Ron, and Lester have already appeared in the game in the past.
Maybe it’s time to reunite the trio in GTA Online and have players take on the biggest heist in the game alongside the iconic trio from Story mode.
This will definitely help Story Mode fans rest easy, knowing that Michael, Franklin, and Trevor are still causing all sorts of mayhem. One last hit with GTA’s hottest crooks will definitely go a long way in terms of fan service.
# 5 Cross game
Crossplay is almost a necessity for any online multiplayer to be successful in modern games, but GTA Online seems to have done well without it so far.
With that said, many groups of friends may not necessarily play on the same platform, so being able to play co-op with friends is definitely the best way to experience the game.
While it’s not an absolute necessity, adding crossover play to the game will mean Rockstar has bigger plans for the online experience.
Getting more players to try the game should be a priority, and cross-play will definitely attract a lot of reluctant players to give the game a try.
