Five Ethiopian footballers tested positive for the new coronavirus, the Ethiopian Football Federation revealed on Monday.
The federation tested 36 of the 40 footballers called to set up the camp in Addis Ababa to form the Ethiopian national team and in preparation for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
Consequently, of the 36 players tested, five were diagnosed with the virus.
The federation did not reveal the names and other information of those infected.
In the next 72 hours, he said, all newly appointed members of the national soccer team, including coaches and support staff, will be tested for COVID-19.
Ethiopia is the founding member of the African Football Confederation.
The game is well loved in the East African country, but many fans are unhappy with the performance of their national team in regional, continental and international competitions. It is ranked 146th out of 210 teams in the FIFA ranking.
