The Addis Ababa Police Commission recorded 211 car thefts in the capital Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in the nine-month period of the current Ethiopian fiscal year that began on July 8, 2019.
Of the 211 stolen cars, 70 are missing, according to Commander Fasika Fanta, Director of Public Relations for the Addis Ababa Police Commission. Speaking to the state newspaper Amharic, Addis Zemen, he stated that the number of car thefts in the city is reduced by 17 percent compared to the same period last year.
Thieves owned most of the stolen cars that brought them out of the city of Addis Ababa by changing license plate numbers and ownership documents. Of the 211 stolen cars, 102 are found with missing parts, while 39 are used by thieves. Commander Fasika indicated that the Commission faces challenges in capturing stolen cars since most of the cars are sold in border areas where conflicts prevail.
Police reports show that organized crime in Addis Ababa, which was relatively the safest city in Africa, is now on the rise. Crimes such as bank robbery and auto theft in broad daylight are becoming common in Addis Ababa.
