Immediately after being declared the 46th president-elect of the United States, Joe Biden said he will get down to business.
By making the Covid-19 pandemic his first priority, Biden will announce a 12-member task force on Monday to tackle the virus.
Reports say that Vivek Murthy, a former US Surgeon General of Indian descent in the Barack Obama administration, will co-chair the team. It will provide a plan for its implementation on January 20, 2021, when Biden will be sworn in.
“That plan will be built on the foundations of science. It will be built on compassion, empathy and concern, ”Biden said in his victory speech Saturday in Delaware.
Murthy will co-chair the task force with David Kessler, former Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, and Dr. Marcella Nunez-Smith, a professor at Yale University. The team will have 12 members.
The task force’s announcement will kick off a busy week in which Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will move forward with the presidential transition on several fronts, and Biden will dedicate himself to the task of building his administration before the inauguration.
On Sunday, his transition team launched a new website, BuildBackBetter.com, and a new social media identifier, @ transition46, to provide the public with information about the transfer. It lists four priorities for a Biden-Harris administration: Covid-19, economic recovery, racial equity, and climate change.
“The team that is being formed will face these challenges on day one,” he said.
Biden spent much of his election campaign criticizing President Donald Trump’s handling of the pandemic. The United States has a record of daily infections.
Biden is also expected to issue a series of executive orders to reverse some of Trump’s controversial measures, such as returning to the Paris Agreement on climate change, resuming funding from the World Health Organization, rescinating the travel ban on people. from certain Muslim-majority countries and restore protections for undocumented immigrants brought in as children, according to the Washington Post.
