ADDIS ABABA, Dec. 25 (Xinhua) – Ethiopia’s National Electoral Board (NEBE) has tentatively set June 5, 2021 as the date for the national elections, local media reported on Monday.

Ethiopia will hold parliamentary elections on June 5, 2021, and the results will be announced between June 6 and June 28, 2021, the state-run Ethiopia Broadcasting Corporation (EBC) reported.

The EBC also reported that the NEBE has tentatively set the date for voter registration between March 1 and March 30. The dates for the announcements of the list of candidates to vote are March 31 and April 1.

NEBE has set the date for the political parties to present their election posters and the decision on the election posters will be between January 30 and February 13.

Ethiopia’s National Electoral Board was initially scheduled to hold national elections on August 29, 2020.

However, the House of Ethiopia Federation (HOF), the country’s upper house of parliament, approved a recommendation in June 2020 to postpone national elections citing the health threat posed by COVID-19.

Ethiopia has recorded 121,399 COVID-19 cases and 1,882 COVID-19 related deaths as of Friday morning.

Ethiopia regularly holds parliamentary and regional council elections every five years, and the 2015 elections were completely won by the ruling Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) coalition and allied parties.

The 2021 elections will be closely watched by local and foreign observers, and the recently renamed ruling party, now called the Party of Prosperity (PP), is expected to face a tough electoral challenge from opposition parties. Final product
