The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said Wednesday that at least 15 migrants were killed in a shipwreck off the western coast of Libya, while five survivors were carried ashore by fishermen.
“Desperate migrants continue to risk their lives in the Central Mediterranean fleeing abuse and exploitation, in the absence of the ability to save lives,” IOM said in a tweet.
The IOM recently revealed that more than 200 unauthorized migrants have died and more than 280 have disappeared along the central Mediterranean route so far this year.
About 10,000 unauthorized migrants have been rescued off the Libyan coast so far in 2020, up from 9,225 last year, he said.
Since the fall of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya has become a preferred starting point for migrants hoping to cross the Mediterranean to European shores.
The IOM has repeatedly said that Libya is not a safe port for disembarking migrants due to deteriorating security conditions in the country.
