Enhanced Box Score: Cubs 2, White Sox 1 – August 23, 2020

Spell the whip off. The bats need to be woken up, but you will take the win. Yu Darvish was just fantastic again, and the Cubs have no chance in this one if he is not. Considering how the White Sox have been on fire for more than a week now, his performance was quite impressive.

Thanks to Javy Báez and Kyle Schwarber for the runes of the Cubs today. It has been a rough stretch for her. Hopefully she smiles.

Craig Kimbrel got the ball in the 8th inning to maintain the lead, and looked pretty good, but was pulled after a few strikeouts and a few laps. Jeremy Jeffress completed the frame and came back for the 9th. Interesting. I think Kimbrel really is not back to be any closer.

That 9th inning, man. After two quick outs, a dribbler went to a hit, then Jeffress ran the next two fighters to load the bases for Yoan Moncada, who jumped one up to the third base side and David Bote could not bring the catch against the screen (he should have it). It felt like that was when it all fell apart. BUUUUUT the next pitch was a routine grounder for Javy Báez, and the match was over. DEMONS PRACTICE, JUST?!?

The Cubs had a great chance of a decent inning in the 4th, with men on second and third and one out. Willson Contreras jumped one to third, the throw came home, and Anthony Rizzo was first safely ruled out. None of the views we saw on the broadcast clearly showed he was out, but the play was reversed upon review. So we’ll assume New York had some crazy camera angle we did not have. Contreras was then sent off and tried to steal second, so that the inning was over without the Cubs themselves having a chance to score an attack. Shoot yourself right in the ass because so many of those great chances for run-scoring have gone down lately.

Then, thanks to White Sox errors, the Cubs loaded the bases with none out in the 5th. But you know how that goes, right? Jason Kipnis knocked out, and Ian Happ ground in a double play. It just needs to demoralize at this point with the loaded bases. I can ‘t even make any more jokes.

At least the Cubs won …
