Aug 12 (Reuters) – A revamped coronavirus coronavirus app for the UK will launch its public threads on Thursday, BBC News reported on Wednesday.
The software will be modeled after Apple and Google’s privacy-centric method of one smartphone tracking another, said BBC https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-53753678. Engineers were still trying to solve problems with the Bluetooth-based tech that people flag incorrectly when within 2 meters of each other.
The app lets people scan barcode-like QR codes to log location visits, as well as the method used by Apple and Google to detect other smartphones, reports the BBC.
The test-and-trace program is key to reopening the economy, but is dogged by problems. A smartphone app developed by the National Health Service (NHS) was initially expected to be unveiled in May, but did not materialize.
In June, the government pivoted away a homegrown model for the app to use the Apple and Google systems. (Report by Rebekah Mathew and Rama Venkat in Bengaluru; edited by Grant McCool)
