EVERETT (CBS) – Encore Boston Harbor announced Monday that it will lay off some 3,000 employees as it prepares to open to guests on a limited basis when Massachusetts enters Phase Three of its coronavirus reopening plan.
The complex has been closed since March 15 as a result of the coronavirus. Although the Phase Three target date is July 6, Governor Charlie Baker has yet to announce a firm date.
When allowed to reopen, the casino said it will open gaming areas in reduced capacity. Services will also reopen with new guidelines established, as will food and beverage sales and the hotel with capacity restrictions.
Although some employees in the resort’s reopened areas will return to work, some 3,000 employees and managers will be suspended. Encore called the permits as part of “very difficult decisions.”
“Several of these employees will return to work for training when we have a definitive reopening date. The rest will remain on license until commercial demand dictates their return, “Encore said in a statement.
Wynn chose to pay employees in North America until May 31, or about 75 days, which cost the company about $ 220 million.
