News anchor Edgardo del Villar died on Sunday after a brave and public battle with brain cancer, the Telemondo station WNJU announced.
He was 51 years old.
He died alongside his wife, Carolina, and his family in Bergen County, New Jersey.
Del Villar joined the Spanish-language station, which serves the New York and New Jersey area, in 2017, after working at the headquarters of the Telemondo Network in Miami. Originally from Mexico, he worked in radio and print before joining the network in 2013.
In a WNBC report, WNBU President and General Manager Christina Schwartz called him a “talented journalist” and a gifted storyteller with a smile.
“We were amazed when he fought an incurable disease with a wonderful determination; Pushing yourself to the limit, getting back into the air during his treatment, and being positive and enthusiastic through it all, ”Schwarz said.
Dale Wheeler co-anchored the newscasts of “Noticiro 47 Telemondo” at 6pm and 11pm until health gust, when he left for health reasons.
“She was our inspiration and we loved her,” Schwarz said. “Our station family extends its condolences to Edgardo’s mother, his siblings, his wife Carolina – and his beloved daughter, Dana.”
