Elton John has been honored with his own official UK currency. The Royal Mint announced the award, marking the second installment of its “Music Legends” collection (the first coin was minted in honor of Queen). “It really is a fabulous honor to be recognized in this way,” Elton John said in a press release. He added: “The past few years have contained some of the most memorable moments of my career, and this is another truly humiliating milestone on my journey.” Take a look at Elton’s coin below.
The Elton coin was designed by artist Bradley Morgan Johnson, who incorporated the singer-songwriter’s iconic straw hat into the design, as well as a musical note and the Union Jack. Commemorative coins will be available to purchase in Gold proof, Silver proof and Brilliant Uncirculated editions.
“Elton John is undoubtedly a British music legend and is recognized as one of the most successful songwriters of his generation,” Clare Maclennan, Divisional Director of Commemorative Coin and Royal Mint Experience, said in a press release. Maclennan continued: “We are delighted to honor Elton’s important contribution to British music in a UK coin. This is the second coin in Royal Mint’s new Music Legends series, which marks the work of our exceptional British musicians. “
