New York Police Department Chief Terry Monahan says June has seen the highest number of shootings in two decades.
The chief blamed the shooting over the weekend on the city’s bail law, a reform that police have criticized for suspending bail requirements for non-violent criminals, reports WABC 7.
Monahan also said that the release of inmates from the Rikers Island City Jail on coronavirus concerns has contributed to the increase in gun violence.
He also noted “animosity” towards the police in the wake of George Floyd’s police-related murder in Minneapolis on Memorial Day.

Floyd, a 46-year-old black man and father of five children, died after former police officer Derek Chauvin pressed his knee to the man’s neck for nearly nine minutes during an arrest.
Video footage of the incident taken by a viewer shows the police-related massacre, sparking protests by Black Lives Matter who have continued to call for an end to police brutality and systematic racism across the country.
‘If you listen to the City Council, they want less vigilance. They want to liquidate the police, Monahan said.
“But as I look out there right now, with the violence ongoing, it is not a good sign,” he said, asking the council and the community for further guidance.
