El Paso’s deadliest virus day: 14 deaths, 340 new cases reported


EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) – The El Paso Health Department reported a record 14 new deaths from the coronavirus on Thursday morning.

The death toll is now 173. The previous record for most deaths in one day was eight on May 27.

The Department of Public Health announced that the victims were:

· 2 women in their 70s

· 1 70-year-old man

· 1 80-year-old woman

· 4 males of 80 years

· 4 women in their 90s

2 males of 90 years

All victims had underlying health conditions.

“We remain saddened by the continued loss of life and send our deepest condolences to the families of these fourteen people,” said Dr. Héctor Ocaranza, El Paso Health Authority. “We are also very concerned about the increase in new cases and the number of people requiring hospitalization seen in the past few days.”

The Department of Public Health also reported 340 new cases. There have now been 10,638 confirmed cases in El Paso County. The number of active cases is now 3,708.

There have been 6,757 reported recoveries. Health officials said about 63.5 percent of people who tested positive have now recovered in El Paso County.

Hospitalizations decreased from 287 to 272. But, the number of patients in ICUs in El Paso increased to 100, which is a record. There are 39 patients on ventilators.
