El Paso sees highest increase in a single day in cases, 1 new virus death

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) – The Department of Public Health reported 233 new cases of coronavirus in El Paso on Friday.

That’s the highest single-day increase ever recorded in the county. Now there have been 5,217 total cases. More than 3,500 people have recovered, and there are 1,541 known active cases, a new record.

The health department also reported a new death from coronavirus. The death toll is now 126.

The victim was identified as a man in his 50s with underlying health conditions.

The city of El Paso said three groups have emerged in an elderly care center, a detention center and a medical care center. According to a press release, more details about these groups will be released soon.

“We remain saddened by the continued loss of life and send our deepest condolences to this gentleman’s family,” said Dr. Héctor Ocaranza, El Paso Health Authority. “We are also alarmed at the increase in new cases seen in recent days. We are still investigating these peaks to gain a more complete understanding of the source of the exposure. “

Health officials also said they are concerned about the increasing number of positive cases in young people. The data suggests that people in their 20s and 30s make up the majority of new cases.

Hospitalizations increased from 108 to 118, there are 58 ICU patients and 25 are on ventilators.
