Eagles projection of 53 men, after the first week of training camp

We are through the first week of the Philadelphia Eagles training camp, so the first day feels like an appropriate time to update our 53-man roster projection. Let’s just get there.

Quarterback (3): Carson Wentz, Nate Sudfeld, Jalen Hurts

Cut (0): None

After cutting Kyle Lauletta, who just didn’t get any reps, the Eagles are down to three quarterbacks, all of whom are locked to make the team. Hurts is significantly more talented than Sudfeld, so it’s really only a matter of time, if not when he takes over as no. 2.

Changes: None.

Running Back (4): Miles Sanders, Boston Scott, Corey Clement, Elijah Holyfield

Cuts (2): Michael Warren, Adrian Killins

Clement looked good early in camp, running hard and catching from the backfield. In my opinion, he has solidified his place on the roster.

As for the other guys:

  1. Holyfield is solidly built and he has caught the ball well enough but does not have a single feature that stands out.
  2. Killins has speed, but he’s a work in progress. It is noteworthy that he has already received more than his share of chances early on, so think maybe practice match with him.
  3. Warren has been almost invisible.

We will project Holyfield for now, but the feeling here is that Howie Roseman will continue outside the organization to more running depths.

Changes: None.

Wide Receiver (6): DeSean Jackson, Jalen Reagor, JJ Arcega-Whiteside, Greg Ward, John Hightower, Quez Watkins

Cuts (4): Deontay Burnett, Robert Davis, Manasseh Bailey, Marcus Green

The six boys mentioned above are all locks. Burnett has done some fun things in camp, but so far not enough to convince the Eagles to keep 7 wide receivers.

Changes: None.

Close one (3): Zach Ertz, Dallas Goedert, Josh Perkins

Cuts (2): Noah Togiai, Caleb Wilson

There’s a real chance for one of the young guys here to discover Perkins as the TE3. Has not happened yet.

Changes: None.

Offensive line (10): Andre Dillard, Isaac Seumalo, Jason Kelce, Jason Peters, Lane Johnson, Jack Driscoll, Matt Pryor, Prince Tega Wanogho, Nate Herbig, Luke Juriga

Cuts (4): Jordan Mailata, Sua Opeta, Julian Good-Jones, Casey Tucker

I just don’t see much in the way of Mailata’s year-on-year improvement, and now he has a few rookie offensive tackles to tackle in Driscoll and Wanogho. I can see no logical path to the continuation of this project.

Herbig is also not safe. On the plus side, the team used him as their sixth lineman in jumbo sets, and he got first-team reps from LG and RG when some of the older vets “had maintenance days”, however, he occasionally struggled .

Juriga has been solid as the center of the second team, and I can not say that I have not seen any bad snaps from him the first week. I don’t think the Eagles will want the risk of losing him to someone who denies, so we’ll keep them for 10 offensive linemen for now.

Changes: Juriga in.

Defensive end (5): Brandon Graham, Derek Barnett, Josh Sweat, Vinny Curry, Casey Toohill

Cuts (3): Genard Avery, Joe Ostman, Shareef Miller, Matt Leo

It really is a throw for that fifth DE place:

  1. Toohill has already made some plays early in camp, and his impressive athletics give the Eagles something to work with.
  2. Ostman also had another fun start to camping after recovering from an ACL tear.
  3. Avery has been quiet but could have benefited from having reached the 2019 trading date for a fourth-round pick.
  4. Miller got buzz early in camp. I have not seen it.

Toohill is the most intriguing of the bunch, in my view. He did not look lost early on, which is good for me to keep him and his constantly above guys like Avery, Ostman and Miller.

Changes: Toohill in, Avery out.

Defensive tackle (4): Fletcher Cox, Javon Hargrave, Malik Jackson, Hassan Ridgeway

Cuts (2): Raequan Williams, Anthony Rush

On the way to camp, the feeling here was that Williams might be able to push Ridgeway for fourth DT place. Ridgeway, however, has had his share of disruptive moments, while Williams has not.

Changes: None.

Linebacker (5): Nate Gerry, Duke Riley, TJ Edwards, Davion Taylor, Shaun Bradley

Cuts (2): Alex Singleton, Dante Olson

Alex Singleton has a legitimate chance to crack deoster too, but it will be difficult to fit him in.

Changes: None.

Cornerback (5): Darius Slay, Avonte Maddox, Nickell Robey-Coleman, Sidney Jones, Cre’Von LeBlanc

Cuts (3): Rasul Douglas, Craig James, Michael Jacquet

Rasul Douglas has some positive traits. He has good ball skills, and he is a physical attacker. In another scheme, I believe he could be a solid participant, and maybe even a player. In this scheme that prioritizes versatility, Douglas is only an outsider, and one who is sensitive to the deep ball.

A trade from Douglas or even Sidney Jones is a possibility.

Changes: Douglas out.

Security (5): Jalen Mills, Rodney McLeod, K’Von Wallace, Will Parks, Grayland Arnold

Cuts (3): Marcus Epps, Rudy Ford, Elijah Riley

The first four boys are locks. Arnold has been physically in camp, and it is, in my opinion, only a matter of time before he starts making plays on football.

Riley has also already made some plays in camp.

Changes: None.

Specialists (3): Jake Elliott, Cameron Johnston, Rick Lovato

Cuts (0)

None of these guys have competition.

Changes: None.

Finished: WR Marquise Goodwin

PUP: OG Brandon Brooks, WR Alshon Jeffery, DE Daeshon Hall.
