Eagles News: Washington Football Team passes by Derrius Guice

Let’s join the Philadelphia Eagles left …

TROUSERS: Washington RB Derrius Guice Released After Arrested In Domestic Violence
Derrius Guice’s NFL career has been marred by a series of injuries (3x on IR in 2 seasons), and now he has another kind of problem that could keep him off the field. The Washington Post reports that Guice has been arrested on charges of domestic violence, including one count of alien, a crime. He was also charged with three counts of assault and battery and one count of destruction of property. Update: Derrius Guice has been released.

Vinny Curry, Eagles seem to agree on terms – BGN
Indeed, Curry could be a good role player for the Eagles if he grabs where he left off late last year. He figures the third or fourth defensive end of the team behind obvious starters Brandon Graham and Derek Barnett. Curry played more defensive snaps than Josh Sweat (38.5% vs. 34.5%) in 2019, but we can perhaps see that the latter is progressing this year. Curry’s return is not good news for the Eagles’ young edge rushers such as Genard Avery, Joe Ostman, Shareef Miller, and Casey Toohill. The Eagles are likely to hold a maximum of six defensive points … and maybe only five. With the Graham, Barnett, Currry and Sweat quartet locked in, the other boys fight for one or two places on the 53-man roster. And they will not be in the actual game rotation (barring injury). Kind of disappointing to spend two picks of the fourth round on Miller and Avery and not contribute at all.

Eagles Postbag: Who is Boston Scott this year? – PhillyVoice
Ryan’s question: Who’s the guy this year who’s been running for a while but is out of sight / out of his mind who’s not projecting people to make the roster, but who’s actually going to play this season and maybe even a influence, e.g. Boston Scott a year ago? Ooh, I like that. You could also call it the Greg a-Ward. Boom. I will be with DE Joe Ostman. I have not read any other projections of 53 men, but I feel that most writers would have liked him? Am I right? Anyway, he was very clear last year if he hadn’t torn his ACL, and I think the team still liked him. Pair that with the idea that the DE4 spot is essentially empty and there for the taking, and I can see that Ostman not only makes the team, but also earns snaps as part of that D-line rotation. [BLG Note: Jimmy wrote this before the Curry signing but Ostman still has a shot at the DE5 spot.]

The movement degrees: the return of Vinny Curry signals Eagles’ lack of confidence in DE depth – The Athletic
The Eagles finished 17th in adjusted season last season, per Football Outsiders, thanks in part to an average season from their defensive ends. The only offseason addition made to Curry for Curry was Toohill, a seventh-round pick. The addition of Javon Hargrave and the prospect of a healthy Jackson should have positive trickle-down effects on the edge. And maybe the Eagles think Matt Burke becoming a defensive line coach will make a difference, too. But defensive end has been an offensive problem area this offseason, and the justification that made the most sense for not tackling earlier was that, as Jim Schwartz said last week about the team’s linebackers, at some point you need to let children play. Under Miller, Avery, Toohill and Ostman, surely one of those players could become an adequate fourth defensive end. That the Eagles are expected to guarantee $ 1.3 million from Curry’s salary tells you that they do not think anyone in that group is up to the challenge.

2019 Slot vs Wide: Running Backs and Tight Ends – Football Outsiders
You might be surprised to see Zach Ertz finish with a negative DVOA in the slot. You might be more surprised to learn that this is the second year in a row that he has been in the negative, sliding from 7.4% to -2.3% to -4.3% in the past three seasons . Ertz has been having more trouble as a receiver lately; he failed to crack the top 20 in receiving DYAR this year for the first time in his career. My gut feeling is that this has more to do with injuries and struggles the Eagles have had at other receiving positions, allowing defensive coverage to focus more on Ertz than anything else, but it’s worth noting.

Training Camp 2020: Meetings, Passages, Conditioning – PE.com
And it all starts with the mental reps. We still have 10 days of them at the NovaCare complex, which would be alive in recent years with the smell of football and heat and sweat and the promise of a regular season around the corner. That promise remains. The NFL will have a season (fingers crossed). How we achieve that, however, is something completely new, which does not mean that it is the wrong way to conduct business. The downside is that we have not had the opportunity to see the new Eagles in uniform and offer hot on their progress. Is that really that bad? In the long run, no. What’s important is how prepared the team is for Washington on September 13, and how they get to that point is what’s so fascinating to observe, even from a distance.

NBC Sports Philadelphia is dying. Long live Comcast SportsNet. – Applicant
The destruction of NBC Sports Philadelphia – the network probably even better known here by its old name, Comcast SportsNet – is a story of short-sightedness of companies, missed opportunity, and a fundamental misunderstanding of Philadelphia sports fans. At one time, the network was able, by a wide margin, to become the dominant sports media entity in the Philadelphia area. It could have the market. It is to the shame of the leaders and decision-makers that it does not, and that its falloff has been so steep.

NFL Insider Notes: Mike Tomlin, Steelers Speak Out of Lack of Diversity, Big Ben Ready for Renewal and More – CBS Sports
Continue to hear from people I’m talking to NFL teams that there’s a great feeling inside the league office about the Super Bowl being played in front of a large audience. Of course, the timing of a fax will be paramount, but there is a real hope that it will be the case, if not an expectation … Also hear more talk about maybe having to adapt to a bubble environment of some kind for the postseason, depending on how COVID-19 affects different parts of this country at that time. Several GMs have talked to each other about it, and some footballers think it could work. Whether that would be end bubble per conference or one for the entire playoffs is a topic of some debate. To be clear, there has been nothing formal from the league office about any kind of bubble, but if such a thing went down, I do not think teams would be shocked …

We heard your feedback, here’s what we do – SB Nation
It’s been five days since we started the first testing phase for our new comment system on some of SB Nation’s NFL sites. Like we said elsewhere, this is the beginning of the journey, and we do not yet have a timeline for the rest of the network past the 32 NFL sites. The feedback we collect from site managers, staff, moderators and community members as we continue to improve the platform will help inform our exit schedule from here. Comments from across our network have become focal in their feedback, for which we truly say thank you. We know we can continue to develop this platform into the tools you deserve, and quickly. Thanks for helping us learn how. Here is what we have learned so far, and what we are doing there.
