‘Drunk History’ canceled after six seasons on Comedy Central

The sixth and final season of “Drunk History’s” will be the last of the Comedy Central show, Variation has confirmed.

The show was renewed last year for a seventh season and was in pre-production on that season when the COVID-19 pandemic forced production to stop in March. Later, Comedy Central decided to pull the plug on the show because the network was moving away from live-action scripted shows in favor of animation for adults.

Series maker Derek Waters drew a first glance with Comedy Central at the time of the season 7 update and will continue to develop projects on the network.

‘Drunk History’ has earned 17 Emmy nominations during her run, and has won one so far. There are currently three Emmys this year, including one for best sketch series for variety.

The show features a changing cast of actors and comedians recreating historical events. It started as a web series on Waters’ YouTube page and then moved on to Funny or Die. The concept included from the beginning an inebriated host, perhaps an emerging cabaret artist or UCB sketch artist, who recreates an obscure historical story, which is then re-introduced by famous stars. As for reenactments, the series drew a wash list with guests including Tiffany Haddish, Winona Ryder, Maya Rudolph, Seth Rogen, Kirsten Dunst, Will Ferrell, Tessa Thompson, Vanessa Hudgens, Colni Hanks, Quest Love and Lyn-Manuel Miranda.

With the cancellation, the only remaining script is live action shows on Comedy Central “Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens.” “Corporate” began leading its third and final season in July.

Last week it was announced that both “The Other Two” and “South Side” would move to HBO Max. It was recently announced that Comedy Central will restart animated shows such as “Beavis & Butt-Head,” “The Ren & Stimpy Show,” and the “Daria” spinoff “Jodie.”

Deadline first announces the cancellation news.
