Strong, abrasive and cheeky – Dr. Disrespect has been one of the most popular Twitch streamers.
Armed with a unique combination of mullet, mustache, and sunglasses, he created an audience of nearly four million followers on the site.
Earlier this year, the character, played by a former game developer named Herschel ‘Guy’ Beahm, even signed a multi-year contract, worth millions of pounds, to stream exclusively on the site.
Then suddenly, on June 26, his channel was closed.
Fans have been speculating on social media ever since. Have you broken the law? Did she behave inappropriately? Or violated copyright?
Twitch has shared with Radio 1 Newsbeat the same statement they have posted online: “We take appropriate action when we have evidence that a broadcaster has acted in violation of our Community Guidelines or Terms of Service.”
They have not said anything more about the case, but given the importance it has for the platform, we hope that the most important people in the company will take care of it.
Pressure on the broadcast site has increased in recent days to intensify its response to streamers accused of sexual abuse, harassment, or use of racist language, although there is no suggestion that such allegations have been made about Dr. Disrespect at this time.
Some staged a protest last week that saw transmitters away from the platform for a day to raise awareness of these issues.
Twitch has begun banning accounts, saying it is investigating cases “as quickly as possible” and added that it will issue permanent suspensions to some users.
Dr. Disrespect claims that he has also not been told why his transmission has been shut down.
“Twitch has not notified me of the specific reason behind its decision.
“Firm handshakes to all for support during this difficult time,” he said.
His wife also posted on Instagram to thank her community for their support.
Other accounts have been deleted.
Brad Jolly, who broadcast as BlessRNG, had his channel removed from the site after being accused of sexual abuse.
He released a statement saying, “Without thinking clearly I did abusive things, and I hate that I did.”
“Hold abusers accountable. That includes me.”
The actions of the website follow a great online discussion within the gaming industry.
Many people who work on games have been publicly sharing their experiences of sexual abuse.
Recently, Twitch streamers have had to get rid of old clips that may have violated copyright law due to the way music was used in them.
It is unclear at this time if copyright concerns could be behind the website’s actions with Dr Disrespect.
His statement says the rules and terms of service apply “to all streamers, regardless of status or importance in the community.”
Dr. Disrespect is no stranger to the controversy that was suspended from Twitch in 2019 after broadcasting live on the site from within public restrooms.
He has also been criticized in the past for his characterization of Chinese accents, some claiming it was racist, something he flatly denied.
