Donald Trump says he is rooting for the NFL season to happen as planned – but only if the players stand for the national anthem.
Trump appeared on “Outkick the Coverage” and was asked about the challenges the NFL faces with the COVID pandemic.
“They want to open up and they want to open up badly and they’ve worked with government,” Trump said.
“I would say this, if they do not stand for the national anthem, I hope they do not open.”
“But otherwise I would like to see them open and we will do everything possible to get them open.”
Trump then went on to explain why he finds the knee-jerk protest respectful of “our flag and our country.”
FYI, Colin Kaepernick and other activists have said several times that the demonstration is to shed light on police brutality and social injustice … but Trump is not buying that statement yet.
“They can protest in other ways, they have to flag us if our country does not protest,” Trump said.
“If the NFL didn’t open, I would be very happy if they did not stand in front of the flag and stand strong …. I would be very happy if they did not open.”
“That being said, I would love to see them open.”
Trump also went to the NBA for what he sees as hypocrisy – players, coaches, refs and more kneeling during the national anthem, while not speaking out against human rights abuses in China.
“Well, I did not notice them sending things back to me,” Trump said in reference to the NBA players … “But I will say that I would not be surprised.”
“Some are very annoying, very very annoying and honestly very stupid, but I did not notice that.”
Trump added, “But I will say this, the way they comply with China, the way they bow to China it’s a shame to be honest and they do a lot more here than they do from China.”
Remember, several players recently said they would not mind if Trump stopped watching NBA games as a result of the knee-jerk protests. Trump did not address those comments directly.
Trump also claimed that NBA reviews are underway and insists the league is in “big trouble.”
