NEW DELHI: England starter Dominic Sibley became the first player to spit on the ball while fielding the West Indies on the fourth day of the second Test at Old Trafford in Manchester on Sunday.
This is the first time that a player has salivated the ball in international cricket since the ICC announced the new Covid-19 rules.
However, Sibley, who had inadvertently used saliva to make the ball shine, was quick to alert the referee.
Referee Michael Gough then opened a disinfected handkerchief and rubbed the ball on both sides to disinfect it. But with the players allowed, the officials took no further action after cleaning the ball.
The incident occurred after the 41st West Indies inning, twice before lunch, but the good news was that the England team reported the incident to the referees.
Under the new rules, the bowling team will receive a warning if saliva is used to make the ball shine. If the team tries the same thing more than twice, a five-race penalty will be applied.
